KSEA 1st Virginia Regional Conference (03/02-03/03, 2013)
KUSCO is pleased to announce our support for the first KSEA regional conference in Virginia held on March 2-3, 2013 at Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, VA. Three local KSEA chapters worked together to host this event since last October, and more than 100 members finally got together for professional network build and exploring the opportunity for research collaboration as well as supporting Young Generation activities. The main programs of the conference were:
– Plenary talks by faculty from VT and UVa
– Career workshops for graduate students
– Technical poster presentation by YG and graduate students
– KITECH-USA and KEIT information sessions
More than 30 faculty including several visiting scholars from Korea, about 40 graduate students and post-docs, and more than 30 YG members participated in all of the programs throughout the weekend.
Prof. Yoon, the university distinguished professor at VT, gave a talk on hydrophobic force in water molecules that causes coalescence and coagulations of molecule structures. Prof. Hahn from the school of medicine at the University of Virginia presented her research work on Chronic Hepatitis C virus and strategic approach of preventing liver infection. Both talks are very simulating and inspiring, and the audience appreciated their enthusiasm on sharing their knowledge and passion.
Three parallel career workshops were prepared in order to provide students with more information about possible career paths in Korea (#2) and the U.S.A. (#3) as well as Graduate School Guide (#1). During the two-hour workshop session, more than 50 students in each session were able to take advantage of the experiences of their senior researchers and faculty members in many different academic fields.
The technical poster session was another successful program at the conference as more than 30 students and post-docs participated. The review was done by faculty members and also by peer student members. For more than an hour, the poster place was packed with participants.
More than 30 student organizers prepared this conference program over the last three months, and it was very successful event in overall. Though there are rooms for improvement for the future, this was a great first step for Korean scientists and engineers society in Virginia Region.
** KUSCO and KITECH-USA are co-organizers of the conference, and KSEA VA chapters appreciate the support.
