KUSCO is pleased to announce its continued support for the 20th KOCSEA Technical Symposium. The Korean Computer Scientists and Engineers Association in America (KOCSEA), founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization of Korean and Korean-American computer scientists and engineers in North America. Its goal is to promote communication, information exchange and cooperation among its members and to provide opportunities for them to make contributions to computer-related fields in Korea and U.S. Currently KOCSEA has more than 350 registered members in academia and industry from both Korea and U.S., who are leading researchers and practitioners in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, and in Information Technology. KOCSEA Technical Symposiums have been contributing a lot to nurturing collaborative relations among leading IT industries and research labs in Korea and US and providing opportunities for joint research and exchange of scholarly ideas.
The 20th Korean Computer Scientists and Engineers Association
in America (KOCSEA) Technical Symposium was held in Atlanta, GA from November
16 to 17, 2019. KOCSEA 2019 was held in Atlanta, Georgia. Under the theme of
“AI ranging from Data Science to Robotics,” the symposium was attended
by a well-balanced
audience around 100 participants representing US academia (46+), Korean
academia (3), US industry (30+), Korean industry (10+) and Korean government
(2). The opening remark was given by Jeik Cho, Consulate General of the
Republic of Korea in Atlanta. The program included five keynote speeches (Dr.
Kyung Dong Ryu from Google, Dr. Cyrus Shahabi from USC’s Viterbi School of
Engineering, Dr. Li Xiong from Emory University, Dr. Yoonsuck Choe from Samsung
Research Artificial Intelligence Center, and Dr. Chan-Mo Park from POSTECH,
Chancellor, PUST), 17 invited talks (including three non-Korean heritage
speakers) in seven sessions, 28 lighting talks, and 2 poster sessions. The
session topics included (1) Data Science I, (2) Artificial Intelligence and Big
Data I, (3) Artificial Intelligence and Big Data II, (4) Lightning Talks
Session, (5) Poster Session (6) Data Science II (7) Data Science III &
Security. The talks covered state-of-the art technologies and on-going research
topics in the field of computer science and engineering including artificial
intelligence, big data, data science/analytics, bioinformatics/medical
application, cyber security, cloud computing, virtual reality, image processing,
software engineering, and CS education.
We awarded four scholarships in memory of the late Prof. Moon-Jung Chung, KOCSEA’s former president. Graduate students presented their research projects in poster sessions and participants voted for best research posters based on the Q and A and conversations with the presenters. The KOCSEA Moon-Jung Chung Scholarships went to Hyodong Kim (MIT), Haegyu Park (Georgia Institute of Technology), Duwon Kim (University of Maryland), and Narae Lee (Georgia Institute of Technology). The main impact of the event is in the dissemination of cutting-edge research results in computer science and engineering among Korean and US researchers and industry professionals. The lightning talk session also facilitated closer interactions for future collaborations. Furthermore, active discussions during and after the presentation sessions let the participants follow up for further collaborations and funding opportunities from government and industry sponsors such as Samsung Research, KSEA, KUSCO, Pacific City Bank, Kakao, Hyundai Motor Company, Samsung Card, Coupang, LG Electronics, and Joonang Ilbo. Having the discussion among industry researchers and academic professors also led to potential joint- development collaborations and also recruitment opportunities for graduating students.
