KUSCO successfully organized the “1st Outstanding STEAM Teacher Training Program” sponsored by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC) from Feb 15 to 23 in Washington D.C.
This training program was designed to offer a glimpse into US education for better education system in Korea for outstanding teachers, “Teachers of the Year” from the Republic of Korea who are specialized in “STEAM” education which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Total participants were 36 divided into two groups; one group of elementary teachers, and the other comprised of middle school teachers.
The major agenda covered visiting NASA, major Fairfax County Public Schools (Thomas Jefferson High School and Parklawn Elementary School), National Air Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Programs were co-organized by Smithsonian Museum and they provided in-depth education in various aspects to all participants.
Final feedback of the program was very positive especially regarding their opportunity to observe the US education system especially in STEM, and to getting new ideas on how to better approach Korean students.
KOFAC is planning to recruit participants for the 2nd program within 2012.
