ABSTRACT
The International Monetary Fund is a specialized agency of the UN system set up by treaty in 1945 to help promote the health of the world economy. It is governed by its almost global membership of 188 countries. The IMF is the central institution of the international monetary system—the system of international payments and exchange rates among national currencies that enables business to take place between countries. It aims to prevent crises in the system by encouraging countries to adopt sound economic policies; it is also a fund that can be tapped by members needing temporary financing to address balance of payments problems.
Regarding the current global economic situation, the IMF views that financial markets conditions have improved considerably as policy action, particularly by the ECB in last summer, bolstered confidence and helped mitigate near-term risks. However, improved financial conditions are only slowly translating to the broader real economy. Prospects for 2013 are for a gradual reacceleration of activity through the year, with 1.4 % (1.3% in 2013) GDP growth in advanced economies and 5.5% (5.1% in 2013) growth in emerging market countries.
