ABSTRACT

Since mid-2011, Samsung and Apple have been involved in over 50 lawsuits worldwide. The lawsuits all involve smart phone and tablet technology. The two companies (and they are not alone) are fighting for several reasons. The most obvious reason is, of course, money. The smart phone and tablet industry is estimated to generate over $300 Billion in 2012. Thus, an increase of 1% in total market share is worth roughly $3 Billion. The other reason is more subtle but is just as important. I believe the second reason is based on the vastly different corporate beliefs held by both companies on the role of intellectual property and Standards in the telecommunication industry. We will discuss these different corporate beliefs which directly lead to conflict and how these differences may be resolved.
